The Bryan Brothers and their 2 lives

When we were first introduced to Bob and Mike Bryan in 1998, they were identical twins living identical lives. Both sharing a serious passion for tennis.

For real. They shared a house and shared hotel rooms. Rumor has it that they even admitted to occasionally sharing a toothbrush. But it seems that marriage and babies will change everything.

Early on, the two had visions of their future. They repeatedly talked about when they would get married and buy a bigger house, where their two families would live together.

Bob fell in love with Miami’s Michelle Alvarez and Mike found his match in London’s Lucille Williams. Bob and Michelle married in December 2010, reside in Sunny Isles, Fla. (just north of Miami), and welcomed their daughter, Micaela, on Jan. 31 of this year. Mike was engaged to Lucille late last year and will wed in Santa Barbara, Calif., in November. Mike and Lucille live in the house where both brothers resided in their hometown of Camarillo, Calif. Mike bought out Bob’s half of the property.

Mike understands that Bob’s life has moved at a little faster pace than his own, and he’s comfortable with it.

“His priorities have shifted and I come third in his life now,” said Mike, after the two won their first-round match at the Delray Beach Tennis Championships on Wednesday. “Like he’s going down to be with his family tonight. It’s cool. I’m loving experiencing [it]; I’m part of his life, and I’m doing the uncle thing pretty often.”

It’s hard to erase a bond that started in the womb, however, so it was no surprise that Mike immediately flew to Miami the day after his niece was born. Bob is making sure to include his twin in the baby experience. The doting daddy already has snapped about 2,000 photos of Micaela — he’s counting — and has sent every picture to Mike. Playing the proud uncle, Mike quickly held up his cell phone and rolled through all the Micaela photos.

“All the doubles players are getting older and older,” Bob said. “If you look at the rankings now, we’re 33 and we’re some of the youngest guys up there. This is a good lifestyle. Everyone who retires tells us, ‘Geez, you’ve got a good gig, so keep doing it.’”

As you can tell in this following video, these guys still have it.

Gay community targets old Australian former tennis champion

Pastor and former Australian tennis champion Margaret Court says she has been the target of a hate campaign since publicly speaking out against gay marriage.

The 70-year-old made headlines around the world in December after saying marriage should be between a man and woman, and was criticised by openly gay tennis stars including Rennae Stubbs and Billie Jean King.

Gay activists launched a Facebook campaign asking Australian Open spectators to wear rainbow colours and wave flags at the show court named after the former player on Friday. Continue reading

Venus Williams is done with tennis, now an author of “Come to Win”

I think when a sports legend writes a book it meas they are washed up and can’t make a living from their chosen sport anymore.  Obviously, getting a book deal is a great way to bring in some more cash.  You think Lindsay Lohan would have learned from this instead of selling all of her free stuff on eBay.  Here is my proof – The book, “Come to Win” went on sale June 29, the same day Venus Williams lost in straight sets to unseeded Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, her earliest exit in four years.  Take a look at Sarah Palin, when she knew she wouldn’tbecome a part of Presidential history she released a book that made her oodles of money on the side.

Venus Williams "Come to Win" book

Venus Williams "Come to Win" book

Of course in the case of Andre Agassi he wrote a book, “Open: An Autobiography” to help him cope and deal with his drug use from the early years when he was such a role model.  The extra money he made went towards his therapy deal helping him deal with the old days of tennis glory?

Of course the other route is to become some motivational speaker like Lance Armstrong.  He charges over $200K per speaking engagement on subjects like “From the Tour de France to the Boardroom: Pushing Your Team to Victory”.  What do you think about sports legends writing books and booking speaking engagements?  Is this a sign they are washed up OR just finding additional revenue streams for their fame?

World’s longest professional tennis match – Wimbledon 2010

The 2010 Wimbledon marathon finally ended when John Isner hit a backhand that flew past an exhausted Nicolas Mahut, ending the 11-hour, 5-minute match in the American’s favor at — deep breath — 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (9-7), 7-6 (7-3), 70-68.  The epic clash between Isner and Mahut was just a first round match! We now have the world’s longest official tennis match. This occured over a three day period of 22–24 June 2010. The fifth set was the longest set in history as determined by both duration and number of games (8 hours 11 minutes, 138 games); the set itself would have broken the duration (previous record: 6 hours 33 minutes)[4] and number of games (previous record: 112 games (singles), 122 games (doubles))[4] records of whole matches.

Other records they broke -

  • Most games in match ever: 183 games over three days
  • Most games in a single day: The first 118 games of the fifth set of Mahut-Isner match, played on 23 June 2010
  • Longest play in a single day: The first 118 games of the fifth set of the 2010 Mahut-Isner match were played on its second day—23 June and lasted 7 hours and 6 minutes.
  • Mens – Longest singles match by time played and number of games: In 2010, John Isner took 183 games to defeat Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7), 7-6(3), 70-68 in 11 hours and 5 minutes of play time in the first round.

Rafael Nadal & Robin Soderling – 2010 French Open

Nadal claimed his 5th victory with a 6-4 6-2 6-4 win over his arch nemesis Solderling at the French Open final. The French Open final was all of seven points old, and the message was unmistakable: Nadal’s knees are fine now, which means he is an entirely different player from the one Soderling stunned at Roland Garros in 2009. That was the first loss of Nadal’s career at this tournament, and it remains the only one.  I think the song that goes well with this win is the song, “I Made It” by Kevin Rudolf. Some quick lyrics -

“I look up to the sky
And now the World is mine
Ive known it all my life
I made it, I made it!
I used to dream about, the life I’m living now
I know that theres no doubt.
I made it, I made it!”

Rafael Nadal biting 2010 French Open trophy

His body sound, his mind at ease, Nadal played his unique brand of relentless, perpetual-motion tennis to handily beat the No. 5-seeded Soderling of Sweden 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 Sunday. Nadal won his fifth French Open championship, his seventh Grand Slam title overall, and earned a return to No. 1. By winning all 3 clay Master’s 1000 tournaments plus Roland Garros, Rafa is now the only male in history to hold a ‘Clay Grand Slam”. Pretty impressive for only being 24 years old.

“I lost last year because I was not well-prepared, and I had very low morale last year, as well,” said Nadal, who will supplant Roger Federer atop the rankings Monday.

“But this time, I’m back,” said Nadal, who covered his face with a red towel and sobbed at match’s end. “I’m back—and I win.”

Yes, Nadal most definitely is back, and he is as good as—or perhaps even better than—ever.

Nadal, who suffered his only defeat at Roland Garros against the Swede in last year’s fourth round, clinched the win in two hours and 18 minutes and won the year’s second grand slam without losing a set in the tournament.

Andre Agassi used Crystal Meth, at least it wasn’t steroids….

Andre Agassi admits in a new book, “I hate Tennis” by Sports Illustrated, that he used crystal meth during his tennis career.  He also lied to tennis authorities about taking any drugs. He says it happened at the height of his success.   This and other drug abuse tales might be a result of how tennis players are trying to cope with their rigorous sport. Major sports headlines are frequently filled with drug abuse incidents either steroids, meth, cocaine, or alcohol and the ever constant problem.

Andre Agassi cries after admitting to crystal meth use

The first tidbits from his autobiography have rocketed through tennis like a 135-mile-an-hour serve. He hated the sport, hated doing something that his father had shoved down his throat. He rebelled, he sought escape, maybe even self-ruin. One day in 1997, Continue reading

Last week, Norman announced in a statement that he had separated from his wife of 15 months, tennis legend Chris Evert. And that came just a few days after Norman had surgery on his right shoulder.

This week Greg Norman has flown to San Francisco to captain the International team in the Presidents Cup.  Cris Evert is home in Florida, where a photo was  snapped a shot of the tennis legend’s unadorned ring finger, just 15 months after the couple laid out $2 million for a wedding ceremony. Roger Federer’s insane between the legs shot against Novak Djokovic – 2009 US Open

Can anyone prevent Roger Federer from taking his 6th US Open? He’s just tore up Novak Djokovic in the semi-final of the 2009 US Open & is on course for another US Open title. How many total titles is that, I’ve lost count….

And what a way to do it. Watch this shot, between his legs, already been described as the best shot of his career & arguably the most audacious & best in tennis history:

Roger Federer between legs tennis shot - 2009 US Open

Roger Federer between legs tennis shot - 2009 US Open

On the next-to-last point of the match, Federer hit what he called the best shot of his life. Djokovic was serving and seemingly in control of the point, standing at the net and watching for his just-hit lob to land out of Federer’s reach.

Except Federer materialized at the baseline just when the lob landed. With his back to the net, Federer swung the racket between his legs – and hit a clean winner past Djokovic. The crowd roared, and Federer’s forehand return winner that followed on match point was anticlimactic.

“On those shots, you just say, ‘Well done, too good.’ What can you do?” Djokovic said. While Federer was still on the court, the point was replayed on the scoreboard video screens at Arthur Ashe Stadium, and Federer exclaimed, “That’s unbelievable.” After this exciting win he is now facing Juan Martin del Potro in Monday’s final.

It’s this kind of split second, athletic genius & audacity that sets the champions out from the mere greats. Who would dare attempt a crazy shot like this when the entire match has been so close?  I am linking over the to the entire youtube clip if you want to see this in action.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVQhIEPbM0g

Many are now arguing this could be the best tennis point in history….I disagree.  What do you think was the best tennis point in history?

Roger Federer’s greatness is now becoming standarad fare – 2009 US Open

When someone achieves greatness for such a long time it doesn’t even make headlines anymore.  Fans of the tennis world expect the final of the 2009 US Open to be Federer VS ??????.   They just have to wait for the question marks to be figured out.  In fact this press conference from yesterday proves the point.

“It’s just not easy to win Slams. It’s just that simple,” Federer said before the room roared ith wlaughter. “OK, you might think I have a lot, but I played many matches before where I didn’t win, as well. And semis or finals just doesn’t give you the win yet. It’s a tough road, and you have to finish the deal and it’s a hard thing to do.”

Federer’s eventual undoing of Sweden’s Robin Soderling – heavy winds aside – from last night’s quarterfinal, 6-0, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6), turned dramatically competitive late but was a good enough exhibit for a small place in the Federer hall of masterpieces. It was Federer’s 12th-straight victory over the 12th-seeded Soderling.

Another title in Flushing Meadows would make Federer the first man since Bill Tilden in 1925 to win 6 straight U.S. titles, a comparison Federer called “fantastic” even as he reminded that he never saw Tilden – Tilden died 3 decades before Federer was born.

Federer’s march has gone largely unnoticed, as well, but his brilliant tennis will keep all eyes on his game this weekend. One aspect of his genius is his return of serve, notes Doug Robson in a USA Today analysis of men’s tennis trends. The return of serve has become the most important shot in modern men’s tennis, according to the study.

I was also reading yet another comparison between Roger Federer and Tiger Woods that said Tiger Woods was the greater athlete of his sport?  Why? Let’s compare the gap between Woods and Federer and the second-best player in their respective sports.  Woods has won 14 Grand Slam tournaments, and is within reach of Jack Nicklaus’ all-time record of 18. Federer has 15 Grand Slam singles titles, the best in tennis history. Continue reading

Rafael Nadal gets a surprise kiss at the US Open

A little bit after Nadal defeated Gael Monfils on Tuesday night in the fourth round of the 2009 US Open, a spectator came out of the stands and hugged and kissed him his naked chest before being escorted quickly by security guards.

Although caught off guard, Nadal did not seem to be shaken, in fact he smiled and chuckled after it happened.

“For me it wasn’t a problem,” said Nadal, noting that the man spoke in English. “The guy was really nice.”

“He was a great fan,” he said. “He said, ‘I love you,’ and he kissed me.”

Nadal had just removed his shirt (showing his stomach patch) and was preparing for an on-court interview when the man suddenly emerged with a camera to approach him. I’ve included a quick YouTube video showing the highlights of the quick hug, kiss, & run guy.  He actually attacks him about the 57 second mark.

Thirty minutes after the match, the police had a man in custody, and they handcuffed him to the bleachers alongside Court 5 (were they better setas for the match then he had before, who knows?). A USTA spokesman said the incident was being reviewed, as were on-court security procedures.

Tournament spokesman Tim Curry said police arrested the man for interference with a sporting event.

“We’re reviewing what happened and then will determine if we have to make any changes to our on-court security procedures,” Curry said.

The scene reminded me of the French Open final in May, when a fan came out of the stands and tried to greet Roger Federer during play, although that incident was scary. Federer was in the middle of a match and it broke his concentration, requiring a few minutes during play to compose himself.

Exclusive photos of Roger & Mirka’s Federer Twins

It’s about time Roger changed out the batteries in his camera and posted pics of his beautiful baby girls, Charlene Riva and Myla Rose, on his facebook page. Meanwhile, Wimbledon champion Federer has released the first public picture of his daughters on his Facebook page.  Belo is the photo of himself and wife Mirka each holding one of the babies, Federer wrote: “As promised, here is a family picture that my dad took. He thinks he’s becoming a professional photographer.”

“It was very funny as both girls had the hiccups while we were trying to take a decent picture. The girls and mom are doing great – thanks for all your warm wishes.”

The 27-year-old top-ranked tennis great married Mirka in April. He announced her pregnancy in March, but it was a well-kept secret that she was expecting twins.  Charlene Riva and Myla Rose were born July 23 on what Federer said was the best day of his life.

I wonder if Federer waited to take pictures of the babies so their heads would return to a normal shape instead of the infamous cone shape most babies heads look like.

One fan had this to say:

Awwww, so sweet! Gorgeous family, I love how each parent is looking at the other twin, kind of like they want to be involved in both whether they’re being held or just watched. Congrats to them on their lovely girls!!! BTW, does anyone know, are the girls identical or fraternal? I can’t tell from the way they’re positioned.

PS Great pic, grandpa! Yo ushould have gotten $100,000 and let a professional take it anyway.
Anyone know the answer to this question.  No one has told us yet? Are these twin girl identical or franternal?

Double the trouble – Roger Federer has twins

Double the trouble with Roger Federer’s new twins.  Seems like he is playing a whole new kind of doubles.

15 Time Grand Slam Champion and #1 Ranked Player In The World, Roger Federer & wife become proud father Of twin baby girls

Roger Federer and his wife Mirka Vavrinec, proudly announce the birth of twin daughters, Charlene Riva Federer and Myla Rose Federer, who were born Thursday night, July 23rd,  2009 in the private clinic Bethanien in Zurich, Switzerland. “This is the greatest day of our lives. Mirka, Myla and Charlene are all healthy and doing very well.”

“This is the best day of our lives,” he said on his Facebook page.

The 27-year-old tennis great married Mirka in April. He announced her pregnancy in March, but it was a well-kept secret that she was expecting twins.

More than 1,500 fans worldwide sent congratulations to Federer’s Web site.

“Here comes the future tennis players,” said one fan.

“Wait 15 to 20 years,” another said. “The Williams sisters will look like a joke compared to the Federer sisters.”

Federer is not scheduled to return to the tour until Aug. 10 in Montreal. Mirka sat courtside this month when Federer won an epic, five-set Wimbledon final against Andy Roddick for his 15th Grand Slam title, breaking Pete Sampras’ record.

Federer met Mirka — born Miroslava Vavrinec in Slovakia — in 2000 when they were competing for Switzerland in the Sydney Olympics. Mirka, 31, emigrated with her family to Switzerland as a small child. Formerly a tennis player herself, she became one of Federer’s managers after retiring early due to injury.

Here are some fan’s comments to the new proud tennis parents:

  • Warmest congratulations and love sent to you all! Twin girls….double the blessings! Enjoy them…I know they are surrounded by love!
  • Congratulations!! You will have your hands full, but as someone who has 2 girls, I can tell you that they are the best! I hope they take after your fine example!
  • So happy for you two. Charlene and Myla are beautiful names. Twice the joy with twins.

Here a few oddities surrounding the celebrity birth:

  1. Gamblers – British bookies Ladbrokes were offering 100-1 for either Charlene Riva or Myla Rose to win the grasscourt title just a day after their birth.  50-1 to win a grand slam as part of the same doubles team and 200-1 to take the Wimbledon doubles crown. “The twins certainly come from good tennis stock. If they are half as good as their dad they will still be a potent force on the court,” said Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg.”

Screaming & grunting to be banned from tennis, really? Sorry Sharapova…

Time magazine and others report that officials at this year’s Wimbledon tournament might crack down on loud screams during play – possibly banning it.

With new attention brought to it Martina Navratilova’s call for grunting to be deemed cheating, the International Tennis Federation is poised to crack down. The ITF is considering broadening the measures that officials can take in penalizing repeat offenders such as Maria Sharapova. Umpires already can award a point against players if their grunting is deemed to have hindered their opponent. But now the ITF is weighing up whether to include “noise hindrance” in its code of conduct, according to Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper.

Roger Federer is betterer & joins Pete Sampras as a tennis legend

Roger Federer wins the French Open, finally

Roger Federer wins the French Open, finally

Is Federer the greatest tennis player ever or just one og the legends now?  Of course, Roger would have preferred to enter history without the retarded Jimmy Jump disrupting his game but old Federer proved he could still even win with a distraction as crazy as that one.

With Robin Soderling about to serve at 1-2, 15-0 in the second set, an intruder ran down a staircase in the lower section of the stands at Philippe Chatrier court, jumped over the barrier and onto Roger Federer’s half of the court. It took guards about 9 seconds to realize they were paid to do more than stand there, & they quickly ran after and apprehended the man.  It’s sad what some people do for publicity.

In the New York Times, Harvey Araton notes that the tennis world agrees not just on Federer’s greatness, but also his goodness. “Count on the sport continuing to root for Federer to climb higher up the mountain of immortality, as it has championed him since he rocketed to the top with the beautiful game and the embraceable persona,” Araton writes. “Even Soderling, who by reputation shuns discourse with most players, became a humble charmer during the awards ceremony, paying his respects. ‘You really gave me a lesson on how to play tennis,’ he told Federer.” Continue reading
